Graphics Research Groups receives NVIDIA GPU Grant

The Graphics Research Group receives Nvidia GPU grant for research on Virtual Reality based shape creation. 3D geometric models can be readily used to share creations over social media sites and to create assets for games and animation. However, creation of 3D geometry is a not only cumbersome but also requires expertise with complex modeling software tools. Here we propose to build an immersive and interactive virtual reality 3D modelling framework. Ease of use and natural interaction are two main aspects of our proposed system. Our virtual reality system will incorporate both algorithmic and design aspects of the modeling. In particular, we propose a bare-hands design of 3D objects, akin to a paper-and-pen sketching. In VR, such a surface creation will take place in mid-air with the help of a sensor such as LeapMotion. We plan to use the NVIDIA GPUs for real-time modeling of complex 3D surface, rendering, and editing. Our system will make use of available open source and high quality toolkits for geometry creation, rendering and mesh editing. This will also include excellent toolkits for GPU computing and graphics, provided by NVIDIA.

We thank NVIDIA for their continued support.
